The Prommekhanizatsiia Factory is there, as are cart-building and building materials plants, a distillery, a creamery, wood-products and food-processing combines, and a section of the Cheboksary Garment Factory. The city has a wood technology technicum. Mariinskii Posad grew up on the site of the village of Sundyr’ (founded in the early 17th century), Cheboksary District, Kazan Province; it became a city in 1856.
