Krakatau(also Krakatoa), an island and active volcano in Indonesia, in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra. Area of the island, 10.5 sq km; altitude, 813 m. It became famous after there was a particularly violent eruption in August 1883, during which about 19 cu km of volcanic ash and other eruption products fell in the adjacent region over an area of more than 800,000 sq km. An increased concentration of ash in the air up to an altitude of 80 km was noted for several years and caused intensive red sunsets. The tidal wave (up to 20 m high) that was triggered by the eruption led to the death of approximately 36,000 people on the neighboring islands. There were subsequent eruptions in 1927–29 and 1950–52.
