A term coined by Wilhelm Reichfor, an Austrian psychiatrist, for the energy associated with sexual orgasm. Reich believed that the inability to achieve a satisfactory orgasm caused many physical conditions, based on the assumption that the body needs the convulsions as well as the transient and complete loss of control inherent in an orgasm. According to Reich, without this release of sexual energy, various mental disorders (in particular, “neuroses”) eventually develop; as a person matures, he or she develops an “armour”—a constellation of postures and expressions to fit his or her personality and protect it from the world.
