Krang (pop culture)The former warlord of Atlantis Krang—not to be confused with Krang, the super-alien from Dimension X and foe of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles—has frequently gone head-to-head with Namor the Sub-Mariner. Introduced by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby in Fantastic Four Annual #1 (1963), Krang is a member of the water-breathing Homo mermanus of Atlantis who rose through the ranks of the city's militia. He holds a personal grudge against Namor, who exiled him from Atlantis after the villain staged a military coup and tried to seize Atlantis' throne. Like all members of the Homo mermanus species, Krang exists underwater. Although he possesses a superhumanly strong physiology that enables him to withstand extreme oceanic waterpressure changes and freezing temperatures, the supervillain cannot survive more than ten minutes outside of water without artificial aids. With his domed head, pointy ears, goatee beard, and epicanthic eyebrows, the usurping tyrant resembles an underwater Ming the Merciless. Krang rarely operates alone. In order to further his under- and above water schemes, Krang has allied himself with several super-baddies of the Marvel Universe, such as Attuma, Byrrah (Namor's prideful and ambitious cousin), and super-scientist Dr. Lemuel Dorcas. He employed both the criminal Puppet Master and Orka, and has been a member of the Viper's Serpent Squad. He became engaged to Lady Dorma, the Sub-Mariner's true love, and tricked her into complying with his destructive schemes. Krang uses various weaponry and armor built for him by his human and Atlantean allies. Krang hasn't been seen much since the Sub- Mariner comic was canceled in 1974. His last appearance seems to be in New Warriors #36 (1993)—but one may assume that Krang is still out there somewhere plotting a takeover of Atlantis! |
