Krasnaia Gorbatov Breed

Krasnaia Gorbatov Breed

a breed of cattle, raised for milk and meat. It was developed at the outset of the 20th century in Bogorodsk volost (small rural district), Gorbatov District, Nizhny Novgorod Province (present-day Bogorodsk Raion, Gorky Oblast) by crossbreeding local Russian cattle with Tirolean cattle and by subsequent prolonged breeding of hybrids with each other. The breed was registered in 1926. The animals, which are basically strong and sturdy, are cherry red in color. Bulls weigh 600–700 kg (maximum, 900 kg); cows weigh 400–450 kg (maximum, 600 kg). A cow produces 2,500–3,000 kg of milk per year (on the best farms, 3,500–4,000 kg). The record yield was 8,007 kg of milk, with a fat content of 4.2–4.3 percent. The cattle fatten well. The dressed yield of fattened animals is 61–62 percent. The breed is raised in Gorky, Vladimir, and Ivanovo oblasts, as well as in the Chuvash ASSR.
