Krasnoflotets

(Red Navy seaman), a military designation below noncommissioned officer of the Soviet Navy, initiated in January 1918. Krasnoflotets was instituted as a personnel rank by a decree of the Central Executive Committee and the Soviet of People’s Commissars of the USSR on Sept. 22, 1935. In November 1940 the rank of starshii krasnoflotets (senior Red Navy seaman) was introduced. In July 1946 these ranks were replaced by the ranks of seaman (matros) and senior seaman.
