alveolar echinococcosisInfection with the larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis, a tapeworm that primarily colonizes foxes, coyotes, voles, and sometimes domestic cats and dogs. It is primarily a disease of the northern hemisphere and is transmitted by the consumption of tapeworm eggs. The larvae grow in a cyst, usually within the liver, but sometimes in adjacent organs, such as the lungs. The tumor in the liver may be initially mistaken for liver cancer.
