Krasnokamsk
a city (settlement until 1938) in Perm’ Oblast, RSFSR, a landing on the right bank of the Kama River, 45 km south of Perm’. It is a terminus on the railroad branch (12 km) from the Kirov-Perm’ line. Population, 56,000 (1972). The city is an important center for the pulp-and-paper and oil industries.
Krasnokamsk arose from the settlement that was founded in 1929 around the construction site of the pulp-and-paper complex. In 1934 petroleum was discovered within the town limits, and extraction was begun; a petroleum refinery was established. Krasnokamsk is the site of the Zakamskaia Heat and Electric Power Plant, a metal-grid factory, and enterprises for the production of building materials. The city has a pulp-and-paper technicum and a medical school. The resort town Ust’-Kachka lies 12 km from Krasnokamsk.
