a city in Sverdlovsk Oblast, RSFSR, situated 10 km from the Verkhniaia railroad station (on the Kushva-Serov line). Population, 40,000 (1970). Krasnoural’sk is a major center for nonferrous metallurgy and chemical production. It arose as a settlement in 1925 with the exploitation of the deposit of copper ores and became a city in 1932. There is a coppersmelting complex (set up in 1931) producing crude copper, sulfuric acid, and superphosphates. The city has a mechanical plant, a plant producing reinforced-concrete items, and a garment factory.
