Liao Ho
Liao Ho
the second largest river in northeastern China (after the Sungari). Length (from the source of the Hsiliao), 1,430 km; basin area, 231,000 sq km.
The Liao Ho rises at the junction of the Greater Khingan Mountains and the Jehol Mountains, flows for most of its course through the Sungliao Plain, and empties into the Gulf of Liaotung (Yellow Sea). The average water flow in the lower reaches of the Liao Ho is more than 630 cu m per sec. Fed primarily by rain, the Liao Ho is in high water in July and August and freezes over from December to April. There are frequent floods in the river basin. In 1935, 17,000 sq km were flooded in the lower reaches of the Liao Ho. The Tahuofang and Erhlungshan water reservoirs have been built to regulate the water flow. Tides affect the river as far as 40 km from the mouth. The Liao Ho is navigable beginning at the city of Shuangliao. The major seaport of Yingkou is situated at the river’s mouth.
