It is navigable to Fort Liard, an old Hudson's Bay Company post, c.165 mi (270 km) from its mouth. The South Nahanni and Fort Nelson rivers are its chief tributaries. Part of its course is followed by the Alaska HighwayAlaska Highway,all-weather road, 1,523 mi (2,451 km) long, extending NW from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to Fairbanks, Alaska. Its principal tributaries are the Frances, Hyland, Dease, South Nahanni, Fort Nelson, and Petitot. The Liard’s upper course is characterized by rapids, and the lower course is navigable to Fort Liard. The river freezes in October and thaws in May, reaching flood levels in spring.
