Its principal tributaries are the Frances, Hyland, Dease, South Nahanni, Fort Nelson, and Petitot. The Liard’s upper course is characterized by rapids, and the lower course is navigable to Fort Liard. The river freezes in October and thaws in May, reaching flood levels in spring. The average water discharge is approximately 1,000 cu m per sec (near Lower Post).
