Liashko, Aleksandr Pavlovich

Born Dec. 17 (30), 1915, in the city of Millerovo, now Rostov Oblast. Soviet state and party figure. Member of the CPSU since 1942. Son of a railroad worker.

Liashko began to work in 1930. He graduated from the Donetsk Industrial Institute in 1947. He was in the Soviet Army from 1941 to 1945 and participated in the Great Patriotic War. In 1945-52, Liashko worked at the Novokramatorsk machine-building plant as engineer, assistant shop superintendent, assistant director, and party organizer of the Central Committee of the ACP (Bolshevik). He was first secretary of the Kramatorsk city committee of the Ukrainian CP from 1952 to 1954. Liashko served as a secretary of the Donetsk oblast committee of the Ukrainian CP from 1954 to 1957, second secretary from 1957 to 1960, and first secretary from 1960 to 1963. He served as a secretary of the Central Committee of the Ukrainian CP from 1963 to 1966 and second secretary from 1966 to 1969. He was chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR from 1969 to 1972 and vice-chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR until September 1972. Liashko has been chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR since June 1972.

Liashko was elected a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU at the Twenty-second (1961), Twenty-third (1966), Twenty-fourth (1971), and Twenty-Fifth (1976) Party Congresses and was a deputy to the fifth through ninth convocations of the Supreme Soviets of the USSR.
