释义 | Noble, Thomas SatterwhiteNoble, Thomas Satterwhite(1835–1907) painter, teacher; born in Lexington, Ky. He studied with Couture in Paris (1856–59), served in the Confederate Army (1862–65), established a studio in New York (1866–69), and headed the McMicken School of Design (later the Cincinnati Art Academy) (1869–1904). He studied in Munich (1881–83), and retired to Bensonhurst, Long Island (1904). A historical, genre, and seascape painter, he is primarily known for his sympathetic portrayals of black Americans, as in The American Slave Mart (1865) and The Price of Blood (1868), a scene of a plantation owner selling his mulatto son. |
