Krenitsyn Volcano

Krenitsyn Volcano

an active volcano in the southern part of the island of Onekotan (Kuril Islands, USSR). It is a typical double-tiered “volcano within a volcano” and one of the most active in the world. It erupted in 1952. The central cone, Krenitsyn Peak, has an altitude of 1,326 m (with a base diameter of 3.5–4 km) and rises in the form of an island from Kol’tsevoe Lake, which has a diameter of 7 km and lies at an altitude of 400 m. The lake is encircled by somma, the walls of the more ancient Taorusyr caldera (elevation of 540–920 m, with a base diameter of 16–17 km). There are traces of ancient glaciation on the crest and slopes of the caldera. Taorusyr is composed of basaltic lava and loose andesite material; the central cone is made up of andesites. The slopes are covered with elfinwood. The volcano is named after P. K. Krenitsyn.
