Memorial Competition

in sports, a competition, usu-ally international, devoted to the memory of outstanding sportsmen and persons who have made great contributions to sports.

Well-known memorial competitions in the USSR are the com-petitions in honor of the brothers G. I. and S. I. Znamenskii (track and field athletics; since 1958), I. M. Poddubnyi (Greco-Roman wrestling, since 1953), la. F. Mel’nikov (speed skating; since 1960), and lu. A. Gagarin (basketball; since 1970). Abroad the most popular track and field athletics competitions in memory of antifascist athletes who died in World War II are, in Poland, the memorial to J. Kusoczyriski, Olympics champion in the 10,000 m run (held since 1955); in Czechoslovakia, the memorial to E. Rosicky, the country’s repeated champion in 800 m and 400 m hurdles (since 1947); and in Yugoslavia, the memorial to B. Hanzekovic, the country’s record holder in the 110m hurdles (since 1948). The memorial competitions in honor of P. Mericamp in France (since 1965) and B. Zauli in Italy (since 1964) are devoted to the memory of prominent public figures.
