Marinello y Vidaurreta, Juan
Born Nov. 2, 1898, in San Diego del Valle. Politician and public figure of Cuba; publicist and literary scholar.
A graduate of Havana University, Marinello was a professor at the university from 1921 to 1932 and its rector in 1962-63. He was in republican Spain in 1937 and published, jointly with N. Guillen, the reportage collection People of Republican Spain (1938). Marinello was chairman of the Revolutionary Alliance Party in 1938-39 and chairman from 1940 to 1944 of the Revolutionary Communist Alliance, which was formed by the merger of the Communist Party with the Revolutionary Alliance. When the Revolutionary Communist Alliance was transformed into the People’s Socialist Party of Cuba (PSPC) in 1944, Marinello became its chairman and held the post until 1961. A member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1965, he was a deputy to the Constituent Assembly in 1940, a deputy to Congress from 1942 to 1944, a senator from 1944 to 1946, and vice-chairman of the Senate from 1946 to 1948. In 1950 he published the book of travel essays Travels in the USSR and the People’s Democracies. During F. Batista’s dictatorship (1952-58), Marinello worked in the underground, edited the clandestine Marxist magazine Mensajes, and contributed to Noticias de Hoy, the organ of the PSPC; he was arrested three times.
As a writer Marinello is primarily a literary critic and a publicist. He is a theorist and propagandist of national distinctness and social orientation in the art of Cuba and Latin America. Works about J. Marti hold a special place in his writings. His book Contemporaries: Notes and Memoirs (1964; Russian translation, 1968) portrays outstanding cultural figures of Latin America and Europe. Marinello became chairman of the Cuban Committee of the Movement for Peace and Sovereignty of Peoples in 1962, Cuba’s representative at UNESCO in 1963, and a member of the World Peace Council in 1950, becoming a member of the Presidium of the World Peace Council in 1966. He has been awarded the Order of the October Revolution (1973).
