Krol, John (Joseph)

(1910– ) Catholic prelate; born in Cleveland, Ohio. Ordained in 1937, he earned a doctorate in theology (1942), taught canon law, and held administrative posts in the Cleveland diocese, becoming auxiliary bishop and vicar general (1953). As archbishop of Philadelphia (1961–88), he played a leading, largely conservative role among American prelates at the Second Vatican Council, and was president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops (1971–74).
