mineral supplement

mineral supplement

A general term for any mineral ingested with the intent of increasing the body’s supply thereof; in developed countries, most mineral deficiencies are rare in those with a balanced diet, although iron deficiency may occur in menstruating women, as well as in those with bleeding caused by colon cancer or gastric ulcers. Self-prescribed mineral supplements are potentially dangerous: iron can be absorbed in excess when ingested with vitamin C, and may cause constipation and the growth of certain tumours; excess calcium causes kidney stones; excess magnesium causes diarrhoea; excess zinc causes bone marrow suppression, anaemia, and may increase cholesterol.
