Monte Circeo

a promontory on the western coast of Italy, where in 1939 a well-preserved skull of a Neanderthal man was found in a grotto. Its structure resembled that of the skull found at La Chapelle-aux-Saints. The skull at Monte Circeo was found encircled by rocks on the surface of deposits in a side hollow of the cave. Apparently, it was placed there intentionally. The cave also contained tools typical of the Mousterian culture.
