one of the major enterprises of the pulp and paper industry in the USSR. The Mari Pulp and Paper Combine specializes in the manufacture of high-quality industrial paper from sulfate pulp, primarily for the electrical engineering industry. The plant is located in Volzhsk in the Mari ASSR.

Construction was begun on the combine in 1935, and in 1938 the plant was opened. In 1972 the combine consisted of a pulp plant, three paper mills, a paper products shop, a heat and electric power plant, a wooden fiberboard mill, and a number of auxiliary shops. The combine manufactures more than 30 types of industrial grades of paper, cardboard, wooden fiberboards, twine, paper yarn, and consumer goods. In 1972 the Mari Pulp and Paper Combine produced 109,600 tons of pulp, 80,800 tons of paper, 24,400 tons of cardboard, and approximately 5 million sq m of wooden fiberboards. A considerable percentage of the output is exported.
