Krylov, Porfirii Nikitich

Born Aug. 1 (13), 1850, in the village of Sagaiskaia, in present-day Karatuz Raion, Krasnoiarsk Krai; died Dec. 27, 1931, in Tomsk. Soviet botanist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929) and of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR (1925).

From 1885, Krylov worked at the University of Tomsk, receiving a professorship there in 1917. At the university he established a botanical garden and an herbarium. One of the founders of phytocoenology, Krylov researched the plant life of the Urals and Siberia. He was the author of The Flora of the Altai and Tomsk Province (vols. 1–7, 1901–14). The book’s second edition, The Flora of Western Siberia (issues 1–12, 1927–64), was completed after his death.
