In south-central VA, southwest of Richmond; organized 1789 from Amelia County. Name Origin: For the local Indian tribe related to the Iroquois. The name, given to them by their neighbours, means 'rattlesnake' in the sense of 'untrustworthy enemy.' Their own name Cheroenhaka is believed to mean 'fork of a stream,' perhaps to signify a favorite campsite.
