Montgomeryshire

 

a county in Great Britain, located in Wales. Area, 2,000 sq km; population, 42,700 (1971). Its capital is Welshpool.

The Cambrian Mountains run throughout the county, reaching a maximum elevation of 827 m at Moel Sych. The mountains are covered by peat bogs and heather wasteland. Montgomery-shire is chiefly an agricultural area, where the main activity is sheep raising. Over the decades its population, which was 51,000 in 1921, has decreased as the people have been forced to settle elsewhere in search of employment.
