Nukša Burial Ground

a flat-grave burial ground containing 218 burials of Latgals, dating from the ninth to the 12th century. It is 11 km from the city of Ludza in the Latvian SSR. In 1947 and 1948 the Nukša burial ground was excavated by the Soviet archaeologist E. D. Shnore, who discovered 207 inhumations, the cremated remains of five women, and six cenotaphs to men. Male and female burials were laid out in opposite directions to each other. The funerary inventory resembled that found in the Lucin burial ground nearby. Scholars were able to deduce property differentiation and ties with eastern neighbors from the finds.
