Mariánské Láznĕ
(mär`yänskā läz`nyĕ), Ger. Marienbad, town (1991 pop. 15,382), W central Czech Republic, in Bohemia. It is a world-famous spa, with many curative mineral springs and baths, situated on the grounds of a 12th-century abbey. a city in Czechoslovakia, in the Czech Socialist Republic, in the region of the West Bohemia. Population, 13,500 (1972). It is located near the eastern foothills of the Bohemian Forest, near the source of the Tepla River, a tributary of the Ohfe, at an elevation of 600 m. A balneological health resort 40 km south of Karlovy Vary, it has existed since 1808. The summers are moderately warm (mean July temperature, 15.9°C), and the winters are mild (mean January temperature, — 3° to — 7°C); precipitation is approximately 750 mm per year.
Therapeutic means consist of mineral carbonated springs (about 40). Based on their chemical composition, the springs are divided into four groups: sulfate-bicarbonate-sodium springs with the formula

bicarbonate-calcium-magnesium springs with the formula
and ferruginous acid springs with the formula
The water is used for baths, drinking, inhalation, and irrigation and is bottled. Peat and mud therapy is available. Treatment is provided for persons with diseases of the urinary tract, nontubercular diseases of the respiratory organs, diseases of the skin and peripheral nervous system, and metabolic disturbances. There are sanatoriums, hydrdpathic-mudbath establishments, pavilions for drinking mineral water, and hotels. The resort also has a clinical center and laboratories of the research institute of balneology.
