Born 1541 or 1545; died Oct. 18, 1595, on Ndeni in the Santa Cruz Islands. Spanish navigator.
Mendaña made two voyages (1567-69 and 1595) westward from Peru with the aim of discovering new lands and sea routes. During his first voyage he discovered all the important islands in the Solomons except Bougainville; on the return trip, he dis-covered an atoll in the Marshall Islands and Wake Island. During his second voyage, he discovered four islands in the Marquesas and the Santa Cruz Islands, including Ndeni.
