an active volcano on Kunashir Island (Kuril Islands) in Sakhalin Oblast, RSFSR. The extrusive dome, with an elevation of 890 m, is situated in a crumbling crater that is surrounded by a vast caldera. The lavas are andesitic and andesitic-basaltic. There are fumaroles and hot springs. At the foot of the volcano is Goriachii Pliazh (Hot Beach), where water vapor issues from the ground. Coniferous and broad-leaved forests with thick undergrowth of Kuril bamboo and dwarf stone pine are found on the slopes. The volcano was named after D. I. Mendeleev in 1946.
