(men'dĕl-sŏn mă-nū'vĕr) During a swallow, maintenance of the larynx for a few seconds at the highest position in the neck by voluntary muscular contraction. This laryngeal elevation results in a wider and longer esophageal opening and is a therapeutic technique for management of swallowing disorders.
