Kuhrud

 

a mountain range in Iran, part of the Central Iranian Mountains. Length from northwest to southeast, approximately 900 km; prevailing elevations, 2,000–3,000 m; maximum elevation, 4,420 m (the extinct Hazaran volcano). The range is basically composed of sedimentary and volcanic strata. Precipitation varies from 100 mm per year in the foothills to 300 mm in the upper mountain zone. Mountain deserts and semideserts predominate, with mountain steppes in the upper zone; walnut groves grow in places in the gorges. Pasture livestock raising is practiced in the mountains, and there are small oases in the irrigated gorges.
