Kuito


Kuito

 

the name of three lakes, the Upper, Middle, and Lower Kuito, in the northern Karelian ASSR, in the Kem’ basin.

The Upper Kuito lies at an altitude of 103 m and has an area of 198 sq km; the Middle Kuito has an elevation of 101 m and an area of 257 sq km; and the Lower Kuito lies 100 m above sea level and has an area of 141 sq km. The lakes freeze in November and thaw in early May. They are connected by streams and are used for floating logs. In 1956 a log-floating dam was built at the source of the Kem’ River.
