a river in the western Lithuanian SSR; a right tributary of the Nemunas (Neman) River. Length, 213 km; basin area, 2,980 sq km. The Minija River originates in Lake Didovo on the Žemaitija Upland. Its upper course has many rapids. At the river’s confluence with the Atmata, a branch of the Nemunas, it forms a delta. The Minija is fed by mixed sources, primarily by rain. The high-water period is from October through April. The mean flow rate 93 km from the mouth is 15. cu m per sec. The river is icebound from December through March. Timber can be floated, and the lower course is navigable. The Klaipeda canal connects the Minija with Courland Lagoon. The cities of Gargždai and Priekulė are located on the river.
