Ku K’ai-Chih

Born circa 344, in Wuhsi; died circa 406. Chinese painter and artistic theoretician; associated with Confucianism.

Ku’s scrolls consist of separate didactic genre scenes, often against a landscape background. Movement, conveyed by flowing lines, links elegantly traced figures in expressive groups. Among his major works are Instruction of the Ladies of the Court, which consists of nine genre scenes (sixth-century copy in the British Museum, London), and the cycle Legend of the Fairy of the Lo River(tenth- and 1 lth-century copies in the Kukung Museum, Peking).
