(also Kuldja; Chinese, Inning), a city in northwestern China, in the Sinkiang Uigur Autonomous Region. Population, 108,000 (1959). An important economic center in the Hi Valley, the city is the starting point for navigation on the Hi River and the terminal point of the Kansu-Sinkiang Highway. It is the commercial center of an agricultural region, and its major indus-tries are the processing of agricultural products (food, leather, and textile enterprises) and rug-making.
