On central western border of CO, south of Grand Junction; organized Feb 11, 1883 from Gunnison County. Name Origin: For the city, named for The Legend of Montrose, by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), for the similarity of the surrounding country; also possibly an allusion to Montrose, Scotland.
