Monumenta Germaniae historica
(mŏnyo͞omĕn`tə jərmā`nē-ē hĭstôr`ĭkə), comprehensive critical editions of the sources of medieval German history. The first society created to publish them was founded by Karl vom und zum SteinStein, Karl, Freiherr vom und zum, 1757–1831, Prussian statesman and reformer. , 1813–86, German historian. In the Frankfurt Parliament in 1848 he defended the idea of a unified Germany, including Austria and Prussia. He was professor at Göttingen after 1849.
