The c.6000 sq mi (15,500 sq km) park has an abundance of wildlife, including elephants, zebras, vervet monkeys, leopards, lions, hippopotamuses, hyenas, giraffes, and cheetahs, as well as a variety of birds. Luangwaa river in Zambia, a left tributary of the Zambezi. It is about 770 km long and drains an area of 145,700 sq km. Rising to the west of the northern end of Lake Nyasa (Malawi), it flows along the eastern side of the Muchinga Mountains in its upper and middle course, falling into the Zambezi River at Zumbo. The river is fed primarily by rain, with high water occurring in the summer. Some sections are suitable for navigation. There are two hydroelectric power plants in the Luangwa basin, on the Lunsemfwa and Mulungushi rivers, serving the mining region around Kabwe, formerly called Broken Hill. |
