an urban-type settlement in Madona Raion, Latvian SSR, on the Aiviekste River, a tributary of the Daugava (Zapadnaia Dvina) River. Terminus of a 42-km branch railroad line from Madona. It has a logging and timber procurement establishment, a dairy, and a sovkhoz.

a lake in the Latvian SSR. Area, about 33 sq km (after the creation of the reservoir, 80-100 sq km); greatest depth, 33 m. Located in a vast marshy depression. The banks are low. The lake is fed in various ways but mainly by snow; the range of fluctuation of the water level is 5.1 m. To drain the basin for agricultural use of the land, water from rivers flowing into the lake empty directly into the Aiviekste River through a system of canals.
