Kungur Forest Steppe

Kungur Forest Steppe

a forest steppe in the Middle Ural area, between the Sylva and Iren’ rivers, south of the city of Kungur in Perm’ Oblast, RSFSR. Its rolling hills reach altitudes of 180–230 m. Karst is developed (sinkholes, troughs, and caverns). Copses of birch, linden, oak (more rarely), maple, and pine on gray forest soils alternate with meadow-steppe and steppe sectors covered with meadowsweet (Filipendula), Bunias orientalis, Ranunculus acris, feathergrass, and other plants on chernozem-like soils. Considerable areas are under cultivation.
