LucanidaeLucanidae[lü′kan·ə‚dē]Lucanidae(stag beetles), a family of beetles. In many species the mandibles of the males resemble horns (hence the common name). The antennae form a pectinate club. The body, including the jaws, reaches a length of 11 cm. There are about 800 species; the beetles are especially numerous in tropical forests. The USSR has 15 species, including Lucanus cervus. The larvae develop in rotting wood, hastening its decomposition and humification. Lucanidae
