Kupiansk

 

a city in Kharkov Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Located on the Oskol River (a tributary of the Severskii Donets). A junction for railroad lines (to Kharkov, Belgorod, Valuiki, Krasnyi Liman, and Voroshilovgrad) and highways. Population, 35,000 (1971).

The sloboda (tax-exempt settlement) of Kupianka dates from 1685. In 1779 it became the district city of the Voronezh territory (namestnichestvo). During the prewar five-year plans a sugar refinery, brewery, creamery, and other enterprises were built there. Kupiansk also has machine-building, casting, rein-forced-concrete structural elements, and hardware plants. As of 1973, a house-building combine was under construction. There are food-processing enterprises (including a milk-canning plant and a meat combine). Building materials and furniture are produced in the city, which also has a garment factory. Kupiansk has an automotive transport technicum and a medical school.
