Kuril Lake

 

a lake in the southern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula, in Kamchatka Oblast, RSFSR. Covering an area of 77.1 sq km, it has an average depth of 176 m and a maximum depth of 306 m. The lake lies in a depression between the Il’chinskaia Sopka volcano in the northeast and Kambal’naia Sopka volcano in the southwest. It is fed by snow and rain. The water level varies by as much as 1.3 m, with the highest level occurring in May and June and the lowest level in April. In September the average temperature near the shore is 7.6°C, and the maximum temperature 10.8°C. The Ozernaia River (basin of the Sea of Okhotsk) flows out of Kuril Lake.
