Kurukovo Agreement of 1625

Kurukovo Agreement of 1625

a treaty between the Polish hetman S. Koniecpolski and the Ukrainian cossack elite headed by the hetman M. Doroshenko. It derives its name from Lake Kurukovo near Kremenchug, where the treaty was signed on Oct. 26 (Nov. 5), 1625. The agreement was drawn up after an inconclusive battle between the Poles and cossacks at Kremenchug. After the battle Koniecpolski decided to divide the cossack elite from the masses. Under the agreement the size of the cossack host was increased from 3,000 to 6,000 men to be paid the sum of 60,000 zlotys annually. The cossacks pledged to withdraw from private and church domains, to cease raiding Turkey and the Crimea, and to renounce independent dealings with foreign states. The cossacks not admitted to the host were again placed under the authority of the landlords. The agreement satisfied to some extent the interests of the cossack elite.
