a city (until 1938, a settlement) and the administrative center of Kusary Raion, Azerbaijan SSR; situated in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus on the Kusarchai River (empties into the Caspian Sea), 35 km southwest of the Khudat railroad station (on the Gudermes-Baku line), with which it is linked by highway. Population, 11,000 (1970). Kusary has a cannery, a dairy, and an asphalt plant. It produces carpets. There is a people’s theater in Kusary.
