In the Middle Ages, the city of Kuba, which is mentioned in tenth-century Arab sources, was located on the site of presentday Kuva. The city of Kuba consisted of three parts: the citadel and the city proper, both enclosed by walls with towers and gates, and the suburbs. The ruins of the city have been preserved. Excavations in 1956-58 outside the walls uncovered a Buddhist temple of the seventh or eighth century with clay statues of Buddha and various deities of the Buddhist pantheon. Remains of residences and outbuildings dating from the seventh to tenth centuries, household objects, and other items were found in the citadel.
