Special Features:Site preserves the 1,600-year-old Marksville ceremonial center, a significant archeological resource and designated National Historic Landmark. The main portion of the site is surrounded by a semi-circular earthwork which is 3,300 feet long and ranges from three to seven feet in height. The Marksville culture is a southeastern variant of the Hopewell culture, centered in Ohio and Illinois.
