NHS Plan
A radical action plan published by the Secretary of State for Health in 2000, which delineated the UK government’s health priorities for the next 10 years, which included:• Modernising the NHS;
• Increasing staff, including consultants, GPs, nurses, midwives, therapists, and other NHS staff and doctors in training, by increasing the number of medical school places. The plan included proposals to reform the senior house officer (SHO) grade and introduce the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB);
• Adding more beds;
• Improving the quality of the catering;
• Cleaning the wards;
• Updating IT;
• Introduciing new services;
• Shortening waiting times for health services;
• Moving healthcare closer to people’s homes;
• Implementing a coherent Cancer Plan based on the recommendations of the Calman Hine Report.
