Treviranus, Ludolf Christian

Born Sept. 18, 1779, in Bremen; died May 6,1864, in Bonn. German botanist and physician. Brother of G. Treviranus.

Treviranus was a professor at the universities of Rostock (from 1812), Breslau (from 1816), and Bonn (from 1830). His main works dealt with plant anatomy, embryology, and physiology. In On the Internal Structure of Plants and on the Movement of Their Fluids (1806), Treviranus showed, even before the development of cell theory, that plant vessels develop from cells.
