Kuzmány, Karol

Born Nov. 16, 1806, in Brezno; died Aug. 14, 1866, in Štubnianske Teplice. Slovak writer and priest.

Kuzmány published the journal Hronka in Banská Bystrica in 1836–38, and his main works—the epic poem Bela (1834, published 1836) and the novella Ladislav (1838)—appeared in it. He was the author of the song “Glory to the Nobles,” which became popular on the eve of the Revolution of 1848. In his theoretical articles on art, Kuzmány spread the ideas of romanticism, which at that time was a new trend in Slovak literature. He translated into Slovak the works of A. S. Pushkin and A. Mickiewicz.
