Moonrat

 

(Echinosorex gymnurus), a mammal of the hedgehog family. It resembles a large shrew. Its body is covered with hair, and its face extends into a snout. The tail is long, hairless, and covered with scales. The head and neck are whitish, and the rest of the body is black. The body reaches a length of 45 cm, the tail 20-21 cm. It has 44 teeth. The moonrat is found in Thailand and on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan. It seeks shelter under tree roots, breeds year around, and eats various insects. The moonrat has a gland whose secretion emits an unpleasant garlicky odor.
