释义 | Moore, JamesMoore, James(1737–77) soldier; born in New Hanover County, N.C. (brother of Maurice Moore). A French and Indian War veteran, he served in the provincial legislature; as relations with Britain deteriorated, he sided with the Whig patriots who opposed the Loyalist Tories in North Carolina. He took command of Continental forces in North Carolina in 1776 and directed them to their first victory, over Loyalist forces at Moore's Creek Bridge (February, 1776). He died at Wilmington, N.C., the following year from "a fit of gout in the stomach." |
